HWA
HWA
concept:
If you're a car nerd, HWA might not ring a bell, but you've seen their work everywhere. The “A” in “AMG” stands for Hans Werner Aufrecht, the co-founder of AMG alongside Erhard Melcher. They were engineers for Daimler-Benz, but grew disillusioned when the company withdrew from motorsport. After three decades of motorsport dominance, Hans sold AMG to Mercedes-Benz and started HWA. Both companies have been responsible for some of the most iconic road cars of the era. Now 85, Hans Werner isn't done yet. He's ready to bring his most iconic car into the future with the HWA Evo, a new and improved version.
Despite their legacy, HWA has low brand recognition, so we were tasked with telling their story and hinting at what’s next. To save money, we sourced a local camera operator in Germany, who also doubled as a fixer for anything needed on the ground before our director and producers arrived. Additionally, we rented local gear, saving enough money to make this project financially feasible for the client.
Another challenge was that Hans would be interviewed in German, a language our team didn't speak. We devised a system allowing Hans to speak in his native tongue while ensuring we got the content we needed. This shoot had an all-in budget of around $25,000, including travel, translation, and gear, for a two-day shoot in Germany and a month of post-production.
